Prayer is a profound act of communication with God. It is series of ongoing conversations with God that may differ when it comes to the motivation, meaning, and purpose. Throughout out the Bible, we see examples of people praying to God in different circumstances. Some uttered prayers of adoration, there were prayers of thanksgiving. Some prayed fervently for deliverance while others made prayer of supplication out of their need for God. In Exodus 15:1, Moses offered praise to God after the parting of the Red Sea. Esther fasted and prayed for deliverance from the wicked scheme of Haman against the people of Israel in Esther 4:16. Daniel was delivered from mouth of the lions through prayer in Daniel 6:16, Paul and Silas prayed in prison the book of Acts 16:25 and Hannah made supplications to the Lord to have a child among several examples in 1 Samuel 1:15.
1.Prayer of Repentance–Acts 2:28
The prayer of repentance is commonly known as the sinner’s prayer. It is a heartfelt prayer of rooted in remorse and repentance from a lifestyle not rooted in God’s holy standard enable by His atoning grace. Our prayer life or ongoing relationship and conversation with God starts when we ask for the forgiveness of our sins through Jesus Christ. If you have never done so, now it is the perfect time to get to get right with God-Isaiah 1:18
2. Prayer of Thanksgiving–1 Chronicles 16:34
The prayer of thanksgiving is a heartfelt recognition and declaration of who God is not just for what He does. All that God does come from His very essence as the loving, eternal and almighty One. He is God all by Himself. We give thanks to the Lord God because He is good for His love endures forever. We should always give Him thanks for the seen and unseen things He does for us every day of our lives. Cultivating a lifestyle of thanksgiving even when we are still waiting for the manifestations of our prayers is a profitable habit for every believer in Jesus Christ. A heart of gratitude ushers in thanksgiving to God-Psalm 9:1. The will of God is for us to give Him thanks in all circumstances for He gives us victory at all times through Jesus Christ our Lord. We need to give God thanks for each day-1Thessalonians 5:18,1Corinthians 15:57.
3.Prayer of Praise–Psalm 150:6
The prayer of praise expresses our deep gratitude for all that God has done for us, what He is doing and our expectations on what He will do. We praise Him because is worthy to receive all our praises and honor. God is above all things, and we cannot praise Him enough for all He does! In the light of this truth, we should offer praises to God with our lips from our hearts for all His marvelous works in our lives. Our songs of praises ascend as a sacrifice of sweet-smelling savor to God through Jesus Christ. Lift up your hands and give Him all the praise and glory for your life-Psalm 72:18, Hebrews 13:15, Isaiah 12:5.
4. Prayer of Worship–Revelation 4:8
The prayer of worship is a prayer of adoration. Worship a reverent acknowledgment of God’s holiness, worth, and majesty. Our worship on earth is a reflection of what goes on in heaven a rehearsal of what we will be doing in heaven for all eternity! Worship should come from the depths of our hearts and soul because of our deep love, respect, and admiration for the One who first loved us and gave us His all. As true worshippers, our worship should come from a place of genuine awe of God’s holiness, His presence, who the Lord is. God is seeking form true worshippers in spirit and truth whose focus should be Him and Him God alone-John 4:23
A heart of worship and adoration at all times is the path to cultivating a lifestyle of worship, thanksgiving and praise. There is always fullness of joy in God’s holy presence that leads and transforms us in the path of life-Psalm 16:11, Psalm 85:6.
5.Prayer of Consecration–Romans 6:13
The Prayer of consecration is a prayer of setting ourselves apart from the ways of the world and dedicating ourselves to God. It is a sacred act that is committed to the Lordship and guidance of the Holy Spirit. God wants us to willingly consecrate our lives and present ourselves as living sacrifices to Him. Jesus Christ made the ultimate sacrifice for the remission of our sins at a very costly price-1 Corinthians 6:20.
The prayer of consecration is also part of our spiritual worship. Joshua told the people of Israel to consecrate themselves with ark of the covenant in their midst before crossing over the river Jordan. In the New Testament, God is the in-dwelling Spirit in us. We are saved to show forth God’s glory and to honor Him with our bodies and actions. It is necessary that as we prepare in anticipation for the manifestations of God’s presence and power in our lives and in the body of Christ-Romans 12:1, Joshua 3:5.
6. Prayer of Supplication–Philippians 4:6
The prayer of supplication is going to God to make requests with a humble and earnestly. This kind of prayer is also known as the prayer of petition. Petitioning is a heartfelt conversation with God, in which we present our requests, needs, and desires to Him through prayer. It’s a desperate plea for God’s intervention in our lives and the challenging situations we are dealing with. The prayer of supplication is acknowledging our dependence on the power and grace of God to provide, protect, and guide us through the twists and turns of life. The realization that God is both our only first and last resort helps us to approach God with humility and great expectation culminating in faith. God hears us when we cry out for help. He is our ever-present help in times of trouble-Psalm 18:6, Psalm 46:1, Psalm 107:6.
7. Prayer of Confession–1 John 1:9
The prayer of confession before God is the affirmation of His truth in our lives and the acknowledgement of our wrong actions or sin. Since confession means to “agree or say the same thing as”, we are agreeing to God’s word and standard for our lives when we humbly confess to any sinful act or wrongdoing in our lives. Through the eternal blood covenant in Jesus Christ, God uses confession as the mechanism for restoring broken relationships with Him. We sometimes have the tendency to make decisions on our own and not seek divine wisdom or not fail to take hold of grace and live according to God’s standard. It is such a blessing that God has already made provisions to restore us to Himself through the sober and penitent confession. God wants us to go to Him and confess our disobedience or sinful actions both done in the open and in secret, so we do not have to be estranged from Him-Proverbs 28:13
Like King David of old, God wants to restore our broken fellowship or relationship to Him. He wants to pour out His mercy and grace when we cry out and renounce our ways. God wants us to draw closer to Him so He can also draw closer to us-Lamentations 3:22, Psalm 51:11, James 4:8, Joel 2:13.
8. Prayer of Intercession–1 Timothy 1:2
Praying for others is an integral part of belonging to the body of Christ. An intercessor is one who stands in the gap to obtain life and blessings on the behalf others. Our Lord Jesus is always interceding for us. It is always a blessing and an honor to pray and intercede for others whether they are aware we are doing so or not. Abraham interceded for Lot, Moses and Amos interceded for the nation of Israel among several others in the Bible-Genesis 18:24, Exodus 32:12, Amos 7:2.
We saved to be transformed to selfless people who not only love and help others but also pray for them to intercede on someone else’s behalf consistently. Praying and interceding for others is one of the greatest expressions of Christian love and unity-2 Corinthians 1:11
Interceding for others embodies an earnest intention to advocate and uplift others before God’s throne. Jesus prayed for His disciples in His final hours on earth and Paul prayed for the early Christian churches-John 17: 9, Ephesians 1:17.
9. Prayer for Healing–Jeremiah 17:14
The prayer for healing is communicating our desire and faith in God to restore our physical bodies, make our spirits whole and to heal emotional wounds. The Bible affirms that we can come to God asking for all types of healing for He is our Jehovah-Rapha. Jesus healed diverse sickness and diseases and even raised Lazarus from the death while on earth. Jesus is still the same yesterday, today and tomorrow –Hebrews 13:8, Matthew 8:16, Mark 1:26, John 4:50.
We can always ask God for His healing or come together in unity of faith to ask for healing for ourselves or, our loved ones or brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ-James 5:14.
10. Prayer for Transformation–2 Corinthians 3:18
The prayer of transformation reflects our fervent desire to be transformed by the Holy Spirit as we abide in Christ and walk in obedience. The desire and goal of every true believer in Jesus Christ is to be transformed day by day into the glorious image of Jesus Christ by living in accordance with His word and His ways-2 Corinthians 5:17.
A lifelong process of sanctification through the inner workings of the Holy Spirit as we submit to Him and pray God’s word into our lives is possible for every believer. I have personally found this kind of prayer very helpful and transformative in my walk with God. We become what we pray and speak over our lives. Fervent believers throughout the ages have cried out to God to transform them to the people He wants them to be. Praying to transformed daily in our hearts, minds, is intentional and powerful-Romans 12:2, Galatians 2:20.
11. The Prayer of Faith–Matthew16:19
The prayer of faith in excising the authority given to us by as believers in Jesus Christ. It is a prayer in His name by His own authority vested in us. The prayer of faith is a declaration of God’s promises for believers in as contained in the Bible, claiming it and confessing it to manifestation by faith-Mark 11:22.
In the Old Testament, Jabez prayer was rooted in faith. Jabez asked God to bless him, expand his territory, keep him from harm and trouble because he had faith God would do it. God granted the requested Jabez made-1 Chronicles 4:10
In the New Testament which is the fulfillment of the Old Testament, we have a name that is above every other name to declare when we pray and to seal our prayers with. Our prayers of faith can move change situations, move mountains and heal the sick-Mark 16:17, Mark 16:18.
The Lord God is a sun and a shield. He bestows honor and no good thing will He withhold from those who are upright in Him-Psalm 84:11, Ephesians 3:17.
12. The Prayer of Blessing–Numbers 6:24
The prayer of blessing over the people of God before they depart from gathering together is also known as the priestly blessing. It is both a proclamation and a declaration, it is a proclamation as ordained by God and a declaration by the ministers of God in sealing God’s blessings over them by His word. God set a precedent when He told Moses to instruct Aaron the words to use to bless the congregation of the people of Israel-Numbers 6:23. Pastors and other ministers of God are still following God’s injunction to declare words of blessings over the gathering of His people before they depart. This corporate blessing over God’s people enhances unity in the body of God-Ephesians 1:3, Romans 15:13.
